qapoje Park Green Shores® Restoration

The qapoje Park Restoration project was undertaken as a Green Shores® pilot initiative to restore shoreline and estuarine habitat within the K’ómoks Estuary while improving long-term coastal resilience. Building on earlier concept development completed for the Pacific Salmon Foundation and Stewardship Centre for British Columbia, the project brought together the Comox Valley Regional District, K’ómoks First Nation, environmental specialists, and design professionals to implement a nature-based shoreline restoration approach.

NHC led the coastal and hydrotechnical engineering assessment, design, and coordination for the foreshore restoration works. This included analyzing coastal and riverine processes, compiling LiDAR and topographic data, assessing hydrologic and metocean conditions, modelling wind-wave exposure and design water levels, and developing Green Shores® for Shoreline Development-aligned restoration concepts. Tender and construction-ready designs were prepared to construct salt marsh benches, tidal and drainage channels, and erosion protection measures. NHC coordinated closely with landscape architects, biologists, K’ómoks First Nation project partners, and regional stakeholders. During construction, NHC provided field reviews, adaptive design guidance, record drawings, and construction reporting, refining marsh elevations, planting slopes, and shoreline protection measures to support successful implementation of the foreshore restoration phase.

Transformed a former industrial brownfield into a thriving estuarine ecosystem that enhances salmon habitat, restores natural coastal processes, strengthens climate resilience, and supports the cultural and ecological values of the K’ómoks Estuary.
