Itiguira Hydroelectric Project Sediment Management Assessment

The 156 MW Itiquira Hydroelectric Project, owned and operated by Brookfield Energia Renovável, is located in Brazil and plays an important role in the region’s renewable energy portfolio. The facility includes a diversion dam and a long diversion canal that experiences significant sediment accumulation, requiring ongoing dredging to maintain operational efficiency and water conveyance capacity.

Brookfield retained NHC to evaluate a range of sediment management solutions aimed at reducing sediment deposition within the diversion system and improving long-term operations. The study assessed both structural and operational alternatives, including spillway modifications, enhanced sediment flushing through existing infrastructure, sediment exclusion systems, desanders, hydrosuction dredging technologies, and excavation-based approaches.

Using hydraulic and sediment transport expertise, NHC examined the technical feasibility, effectiveness, and operational implications of each option. The assessment provided a comprehensive comparison of alternatives and identified opportunities to improve sediment management while reducing reliance on continuous maintenance dredging.

Identified feasible sediment management strategies that can reduce maintenance requirements, improve diversion canal performance, and enhance the long-term operational efficiency of a major hydroelectric facility.
