Site C Clean Energy Project

The Site C Clean Energy Project, one of Canada’s largest renewable energy developments, involves the construction of a third dam and hydroelectric generating station on the Peace River in northeastern British Columbia. The proposed development will have an installed capacity of 1,100 MW and will generate enough electricity to power 450,000 homes, helping meet British Columbia’s long-term energy needs.

Since 2012, LaSalle | NHC has supported BC Hydro through an extensive program of physical hydraulic model studies aimed at validating and optimizing the hydraulic design of all project structures. A large-scale 1/80 comprehensive model was developed to assess the power intake and spillway. A sectional 1/30 scale model of the gated spillway was also developed to operate in parallel allowing for a more detailed examination of energy dissipation and total dissolved gas issues. Subsequent model studies were also conducted to develop the operation of the diversion tunnels and gates during reservoir filling activities.

More recently, Lasalle | NHC has conducted new studies of downstream erosion processes to further refine operating strategies, enhance long-term performance, and minimize environmental impacts.

Supported the successful delivery of a major renewable energy project through advanced physical  hydraulic modelling that guided design, optimized infrastructure performance, informed operational decision-making, and helped reduce environmental impacts throughout the project’s lifecycle.
