Magdalen Islands Resilience Study
The Martinique sector of the Magdalen islands is a dynamic coastal environment facing significant risks from erosion and flooding. Sea level rise and increasingly severe storm events, including Hurricane Dorian (September 2019) and Fiona (September 2022), have accelerated shoreline change and dune retreat along portions of provincial Route 199, a critical transportation corridor for the region.

Lasalle | NHC was retained by the Ministère des Transports et de la Mobilité Durable (MTMD) to develop mitigation solutions to address coastal flooding and erosion for four vulnerable sections along Route 199 within the Martinique sector. Bounded by the Lagune de Havre-aux-Basques to the west and the Baie de Plaisance to the east, this section of Route 199 is exposed to coastal erosion processes and coastal flooding from both sides. The study evaluated the area’s unique vulnerability and informed resilient infrastructure solutions design to reduce flood and erosion risks while supporting long-term transportation connectivity.
Developed climate-resilient coastal adaptation strategies that help protect critical transportation infrastructure, reduce erosion and flood risk, and enhance the long-term resilience of Route 199 in the Magdalen Islands.
