Gladwin Creek Culvert Replacement

Following a major flood event in November 2021, the existing 2100 mm corrugated steel pipe (CSP) culvert at Gladwin Creek experienced a partial washout, compromising the safety and reliability of the transportation corridor. As an interim measure, the Ministry of Transportation and Transit installed three temporary 2100 mm CSP culverts in 2022 while a permanent replacement solution was developed.

NHC, as part of a multi-disciplinary team, was retained to provide detailed hydrotechnical design of a permanent crossing that meets current Ministry design standards and can safely convey extreme flood and debris-flood events. The project culminated in the design of a 3990 mm structural plate corrugated steel pipe culvert, completed in 2025.

The Gladwin Creek site presented several significant engineering challenges, including steep terrain, debris-flood hazards, and complex hydraulic conditions. NHC completed advanced numerical modelling and load analysis to evaluate flood conveyance requirements, debris management at the inlet, and energy dissipation downstream of the new structure. Particular attention was given to the downstream works, which include a reinforced concrete, energy dissipation pool, and a steep, concreted boulder-lined outlet channel.

Delivered a resilient culvert replacement, with debris and energy management solutions that improve the resiliency of critical transportation infrastructure in a challenging environment.
