Chaglla Hydroelectric Project

Developed by Empresa Generación Huallaga, this project is a major renewable energy initiative on the Huallaga River in eastern Peru. With an installed capacity of 406 MW, the facility is one of the country’s largest hydroelectric generating stations and plays an important role in meeting Peru’s growing energy demands.

To support the project’s environmental objectives, NHC conducted comprehensive instream flow and fish habitat assessments using both 1D and 2D hydraulic modelling tools. The study evaluated the relationship between river flows and aquatic habitat availability for native fish species, providing critical information for the development of the project’s Ecological Flow Management Plan.

The modelling program integrated biological and physical field data to assess habitat conditions downstream of the dam and identify flow regimes that help sustain aquatic ecosystems. The results informed measures designed to maintain habitat for endemic fish species, reduce ecological impacts, and support long-term river health. Findings were independently reviewed and validated by international experts in instream flow assessment.

NHC also conducted field investigations under both low- and high-flow conditions to better understand river dynamics, tributary characteristics, and opportunities for environmental mitigation and enhancement. These assessments helped refine project recommendations and identify additional measures to address fisheries-related impacts associated with construction and operations.

Supported the sustainable development of a major hydroelectric project by protecting fish habitat, informing ecological flow management, and helping balance renewable energy generation with the long-term health of river ecosystems.
