Zian has extensive experience in water resources engineering, spanning hydrology, watershed planning, hydraulic design, and construction of civil and in-stream works. He specializes in hydrotechnical engineering and river and stream restoration and has served as technical lead, engineer of record, and project manager on projects involving drainage, flood protection, hydrotechnical assessments, river and wetland restoration, and dam design.

We were curious about what led Zian to chose this career, and here’s what we learned:

What inspired you to pursue this career?

“My parents were both engineers who worked internationally and conducted research on irrigation, water, and wastewater management issues. I absorbed a lot of general knowledge about water issues from them, and they influenced my future career path by encouraging me to pursue water-related topics in school projects. I also enjoyed mathematics, physics, and the built environment, so civil engineering was a natural career choice for me.”

What kind of projects do you work on?

“I work on all kinds of small to medium sized projects throughout British Columbia; I feel like a water resources generalist. I love working on rivers whether I’m designing stream restoration on the Coast, assessing fish habitat in the Valley, or designing the waterway opening for a highway bridge. I also design wetlands and their associated small dam and water control infrastructures.”
