History

A strong foundation

NHC was founded by individuals with a strong technical background and unique focus. With change and growth, we remain true to a culture that has shaped our consulting practice over the past 50 years.

1972

NHC is born

NHC is incorporated by Dick Cooper and Art Charbonneau in Edmonton, Alberta. Soon after, NHC begins work on its first major project: the Trans-Alaska Pipeline.

1974

The company grows

NHC opens its second branch in Vancouver, British Columbia.

1979

US bound

To provide greater geographic diversity, NHC expands into the US by establishing an office and physical modelling lab in Seattle.

1980

Expanding overseas

Following the completion of a pilot project, NHC was awarded a multi-year contract for small-scale drainage and flood control in Bangladesh providing a foothold into the Asian market.

1994

Continuing to grow

The Sacramento, California office is established and begins acquiring contracts with the USACE, FEMA, and Department of Transportation.

2000

The move into Latin America

NHC pursues projects in Latin America, providing opportunities for geographic diversity and the acquisition of private-sector clients.

2013

Planting roots in Brasil

NHC establishes a subsidiary company in Brasil creating a flagship for our South America operations.

2014

Merging with Quebec

LaSalle Group of Companies merges with NHC, helping to expand into Eastern Canada and extend NHC’s overall physical modelling capabilities.

2022

Redefining what’s possible

NHC celebrates 50 years in business.

2025

Embracing the future

With over 290 staff, NHC is now located in 16 offices around the world.
